Ideal Poultry has been family-owned since 1937, when brothers Leo and Theo Fuchs (pronounced “Fox”) started a hatchery to make a living coming out of the Depression. Four generations later, it’s the largest supplier of backyard poultry in the United States: more than 6 million chicks, ducks, and other young poultry shipped annually, hatched from over 50,000 company-owned breeders. And the operating model only works because of where Cameron sits on the map.

The compounding is what matters here: an almost-90-year-old family business that has stayed family-owned, in the same town, while building a logistical reach most metro-based competitors would envy. Thirteen family members work there today, Kevin among the fourth generation. The location didn’t constrain the business. It made the business possible.
